Albert “Hubbo” George Gotelaere, 101, a lifelong resident of Superior, died on Sunday, January 29, 2017 just twenty-four days short of his 102nd birthday. Born February 22, 1915 to John and Philomena (DuPont) Gotelaere, he was one of nine children.

Albert graduated from East High School in Superior in 1934. He married Margaret McDonald on November 30, 1938 and they celebrated fifty-nine years of marriage before her passing in 1998. He served his country in the United States Army in the 720th Railway Operating Battalion of the Transportation Corp during World War II. He worked as a Switch Foreman with the Great Northern Railway and Burlington Northern Railroad for forty years before retiring in 1975.

There are many happy memories of time spent at the cabin in Lake Nebagamon. Albert and Margaret loved to travel and spent many years as “snowbirds” in Florida and California. He enjoyed hunting in his younger years and fishing well into his 90’s. Albert was able to live independently in his home until his 99th birthday. Proud of his Belgian heritage, Albert has been a member of the Belgium Club since joining when he was eighteen years old. He attended St. Anthony Catholic Church. He was also a member of the United Transportation Union and the D.A.V.

He is survived by his sons Timothy (Bonnie) Gotelaere of Duluth,MN and James (Sallie) Gotelaere, his daughter Bonnie (Mike) Simzek, both of Superior, WI; seven grandchildren, Timothy Gotelaere Jr., Bradley (Wendy) Gotelaere, Jay (Lisa) Gotelaere, Joel (Sarah) Gotelaere, Michele (Wei) Lin, Robyn Simzek, Lyn (Brandon) Hoffman; eighteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret Gotelaere; five sisters, Alida, Mary, Margaret, Adrian and Germaine; three brothers, George, William and Francis; and his beloved dog Zoey.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 3, 2017 in St. Anthony Catholic Church, 4315 East Third Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Adam Laski as celebrant. Burial will take place at St. Francis Cemetery. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospice.
