Amanda Haling

Amanda C. Haling, 96, lifelong Superior resident died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born on October 21, 1914 in Solon Springs, WI to Henry P. and Ottilia (Klinzing) Haling.

Amanda worked for the City of Superior Finance Department beginning in 1937 and retiring in 1976 with thirty-nine years of service. She held various positions with the Finance Department.

She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and a member of the former St. Louis Church. She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court 1190, Cathedral Altar Society, the Douglas County Senior Citizens Center, the St. Francis Travelers Club and Rockmont Garden Club.

Mandy enjoyed bowling and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling with her dear friend Cecile Helsel. She cherished visiting with her wonderful friends and neighbors. Mandy’s family meant everything to her. She especially loved spending time with her nephew and nieces and their families whom she called her kids. Former City of Superior finance director Timothy M. Nelson said “Amanda is one of those rare individuals we chance to meet in our lifetime. Her qualities are many and her faults are few. To have known her is a pleasure and an enrichment on one’s own travels through life. Amanda will always deserve our thanks for the examples she set for all of us in her work, her attitude and her kindness to others.”

Amanda is survived by nieces, Dianne (Tom) Andersen, Blaine, MN, Donna (Gordon) Huhta and Deborah (Paul) Velin, both of Superior, WI, Linda (Fred) O’Kelley, San Antonio, TX and Rita (Mark) Weir, Lee, NH; nephew, Kevin (Linda Sigler) Giersdorf, Superior, WI; sister-in-law, Terry Haling, El Paso, TX; grandnieces, Andrea Andersen, Blaine, MN and Teresa O’Kelly, San Antonio, TX; grandnephews, Harry (Meghan) Anderson, Duluth, MN and Garth Velin, Superior, WI and one great grandniece, Keeley Elizabeth Anderson, Duluth, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ottilia Haling, two brothers, Henry B. and Rynart Haling, three sisters, Eleanor Giersdorf, June Evans and Mary Patricia Haling and grandnephew, Gunnar Velin.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM, Friday, December 17, 2010 in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior with a CDA rosary to be held at 5:00 PM and a scripture service at 7:00 PM.

Visitation will resume at 9:30 AM on Saturday, December 18, 2010 in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers for the service will be Jay and Tim Gallagher, Travis Penney, Tom Ostrander, Dave Swaab and Don Baltes.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court #1190.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Amanda’s name to Cathedral School.
