Amund Ole Lear

November 8, 1942 — December 31, 2021

Amund Ole Lear, 79, longtime resident of Superior, WI, died peacefully, Friday, December 31, 2021, at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. He was born in Superior, November 8, 1942, the son of Howard and Naomi (Rice) Lear.

He graduated from East High School and went on to serve his country honorably as a medic in the United States Army.

Ole worked as a salesman after returning from the service and worked various jobs including several years at Gamble Robinson in Duluth and as a paramedic for the Douglas County Ambulance.  Ole began his career in law enforcement in 1976.  He continued to serve his community honorably as a proud member of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department for many years including 15 of them as a K-9 handler until his retirement in 1997.  Still with a heart for law enforcement, Ole worked for the park service at both Pattison and Amnicon State Parks as a Park Ranger.  He also worked for the Lake Nebagamon Police Department.  Ole was extremely proud of his law enforcement and canine career.  Throughout his dedicated service, he was a charter member of both the Douglas County Sheriff’s Rescue Squad and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department’s Canine Program.  He was also a member of United States Police Canine Association.

In his spare time, Ole was an avid World War II enthusiast, and he enjoyed playing cribbage and pool, as well as telling stories from his time in the military and his law enforcement career.  Above all, he was a loving family man and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his children, Richard Lear, Superior, WI; Michael Lear, Superior, WI; Michelle (Chris) Pope, Superior, WI; William Lear, Superior WI; Lori (Jason) King-Graves, Faribault, MN; Robert (Geri) Lear, Superior, WI; his former wife of nearly 40 years, Rosemary (Anderson) Lear, Superior WI; his thirteen grandchildren--Naomi, Noah, Emily, Ryan, Ellen, Marianne, Ariel, Dawson, Lexie, Brooke, Kate, Ethan, and Wyatt; great-grandson, Jack; and sister-in-law, Darla Lear, Mt Pleasant, MI and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Denise Lear, and his brother Warren “Bud” Lear.
