Arthur Peterson, 88, lifelong resident of Superior, died Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. Arthur was born in Superior, September 2, 1929, the son of Arthur and Clairice (Hanson) Peterson.
He served his country honorably in the US Army, both in Ft. Leonard Wood and Ft. Eustis, VA, where his love of steamships began. When he returned home he began working on the Great Lakes as a Coal Passer, raising through the ranks until he retired as Chief Engineer.
Art enjoyed being a husband to Marie Peterson, who passed in 2009.
He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Superior, the International Brotherhood of American Maritime Officers, and a lifetime member of the Humane Society of the US.
Art also contributed to many organizations such as, the ASPCA, North Shore Animal League, Humane Society of Douglas Co., Defenders of Wildlife, American Heart Association, WI Public Radio, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, Sloan Kettering, Salvation Army, Wounded Warrior Project, Alzheimer’s Association, Habitat for Humanity, National Wildlife Federation, Mayo Clinic, Nature Conservancy, Easter Seals, and the Disabled American Vets.
He was a loving father to his sons, Todd Peterson, Superior, WI, and Kevin (Patty) Peterson, Oneida, WI; daughter, Kristine (Jerry) Skeens, Knoxville, TN; granddaughter, Abigael Peterson, Oneida, WI; nephews, Glen, Gary and Greg Peterson.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Marie and brother, David Peterson.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM, Tuesday, January 30, 2018, in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior, and will resume at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Avenue, Superior, continuing until the 11:00 AM memorial service with Pastor Sarah Kerkes officiating and Bridget Strudgewick co-officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Art had an overwhelming love of animals his whole life. In that respect, in lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Douglas County, 138 Moccasin Mike Rd., Superior, WI; the North Shore Animal League of America or, to a shelter of your choice.
