Dr. Bernard Earl Stein, D.D.S., 75, lifelong resident of Superior, WI, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Bernard was born July 6, 1948, in Superior, the son of Robert and Genevieve (Stenback) Stein.

Bernard graduated from Superior Senior High School with the class of 1966. Bernard then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he completed his apprenticeship program through 3M to become a machinist. While working as a machinist for 3M, he attended the University of Minnesota earning his bachelor’s degree. Next, Bernard attended Marquette University’s School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1977. He opened his own practice, “Family Dentist Dr. B. E. Stein” in Superior, Wisconsin where he lived true to his motto, “We cater to cowards,” and all of his patients knew they were in the best hands.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joan Carlson, on March 30, 1995, in Las Vegas. They spent twenty-eight wonderful years together before her passing in September of 2023. Bernard was a man of many interests and talents including, but not limited to and definitely not in chronological order: certified private pilot; certified helicopter pilot; certified SCUBA diver; licensed taxi cab driver; ordained minister; Trekkie aka the biggest Star Trek fan (who snuck behind the scenes because the door wasn’t locked); Yo Yo the Clown performing in several parades and events; had his own lapidary, woodworking, and machine shops; was Shet’s Shepherd; taxidermist including the emu in his dental office; as a rocket scientist he executed many memorable launches; cannon shooter; avid snowmobiler with his close friends; an aviculturist raising many birds from pheasants to peacocks to emu; photographer; videographer/filmmaker; sea-worthy raft builder, just ask cousin Kenny; alligator hunter; ventriloquist performing with Red the dummy; cat fancier; wood and metal worker; motorcyclist; deer slayer; kite flier; classic car collector; ham radio operator; numismatist; welder; clock maker; antique radio restoration; inventor of new phrases; fisherman; jokester; computer refurbisher; world traveler; Santa Claus with the big red prize bag; full time memory maker; and far too many more to list.

Bernard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Joan Stein; grandson Austin Edwards; and parents, Robert, and Genevieve Stein. He is survived by his daughter Kathy Stein, Bloomington, MN; sons Steve (Lynne) Edwards, Mike (Rae Ann) Edwards, and Tyler (Dani) Edwards, all of Superior, WI; grandchildren John (Lyndsey), Paul (Taylor), Cole, Adam, Brody, Carter, Carsen, and Harper; great-grandchildren Elijah, Eliana, Henry, Mia, Luke, Madilynne Claire, and a great-granddaughter on the way; brother David (Laurel) Wicklund, Superior, WI; sister Marcy Upthegrove, Eau Claire, WI; longtime family friend Jeff Gronski, Superior, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

His shindig will be held June 21, 2024, at Darrow Road Wesleyan Church, 4020 S Darrow Rd, Superior, WI 54880. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the 4:00 p.m. service, followed by a dinner in the fellowship hall.
