Bernice Babcock

October 7, 1915 — November 2, 2011

Bernice Babcock, long-time resident of Maple, died on November 2, 2011 at the age of 96, in hospice care at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth.

She leaves to remember her with love, her son, Jim (Sue) Babcock of Mauston, WI; daughter, Barbara (Tom) Bilger of Eau Claire, WI; son Alan, (Lynne) Babcock of Superior, WI; daughter, Mary (Peter) Calhoun of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and son, Bob (Karen) Babcock of Phillips Ranch, CA; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; nieces, Elaine Funseth of Oregon, WI and Jean Pulver of New Glarus, WI.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert in March 1948 and her beloved husband in December 1983.

Bernice was born on October 7, 1915 in New Glarus, WI.

She married Ken Babcock on February 12, 1942. In 1960, they purchased their home in Maple.


Bernice was employed as the bookkeeper for the Maple Telephone Company from 1967 to 1987. She was also the owner of the Log Cabin Craft Shop, which was open from 1977 to 2010.

Bernice loved to do many types of handiwork and was known for her beautiful hand-loomed rugs, was an avid reader and was always happy to have family and friends come to visit with her.

Bernice was a member of the Lakeside Baptist Church.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2011 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior. Visitation will continue at 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Funeral Service on Monday, November 7, 2011 in the Lakeside Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Ells, officiating.

Private family burial will be in the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.

Pallbearers for the service will be Bernice’s grandchildren, Joe Calhoun, Dan Calhoun, Kim Babcock, Matthew Decker-Maurer, Tony Babcock and Andy Babcock.
