Betty Carolyn (Bergsten) Wood, 76, of Poplar, WI, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 14, 2016 in her home. She was born in Superior, WI on December 12, 1939, the daughter of Walde and Gertrude (Lundberg) Bergsten.
She graduated from Northwestern High School in 1958 and attended the University of Wisconsin - Stout studying Home Economics and English. In 1961 she married Robert D. Wood of Ionia, Michigan. For 25 years Betty enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her three children. She was divorced in 1986 and earned an AA degree from Kalamazoo Valley Community College at age 50. She then worked as a secretary for 20+ years with Kalamazoo Radiology and Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI retiring in 2009. In 2011 she moved back to her home town of Poplar, WI. She was a long time member of Mission Covenant Church where she served in the Senior Adult Ministry and Food Share, and was active in Women's Ministries. Betty was a member of the Old Brule Society and Homemakers. At Head Start she volunteered as a visiting grandma, reading books and handing out mittens she had knitted for each child.
Betty enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, listening to music, spending time with friends and family, and all things Swedish, including baking Pepparkakor with her grandchildren. Betty enjoyed volunteering her time where ever she could.
She is survived by one son, David (Brenda) Wood, Abingdon, Maryland; two daughters, Heather (Jeffrey) Jones, Aurora, Minnesota; and Elizabeth Wood, Niles, Michigan; two grandchildren, Esther and Josh Jones; four brothers, Charles (Janice) Bergsten, Daniel (Dorothy) Bergsten, Steve (Bonnie) Bergsten, and Bruce (Donna) Bergsten; sister-in-law, Dianna Bergsten; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Bergsten.
Funeral services will begin with a 9:00 AM grave side committal service Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Poplar Cemetery, Poplar, Wisconsin.
Public visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Memorial Service Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Mission Covenant Church in Poplar with Rev. Darrell Nelson, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Park Bible Camp (c/o Mission Covenant Church) where Betty was a camper and her grandchildren have been active as campers, volunteers and staff.
