Bruce Allen Blakey, 78, longtime area resident, died peacefully, Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN with his daughters and sister by his side. He was born in Superior, WI, May 10, 1941, the son of Edward and Doris (Bergren) Blakey.
Bruce graduated from Northwestern High School in 1959 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Education from the former Superior State Teachers College in 1964. He worked as a High School math Teacher in Cornell, WI prior to his illness. Then worked as a Custodian at NHS and later worked for Twin Ports Grocery for many years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon.
Bruce loved spending time at his cabin. He enjoyed wood working, loved bingo and was always up for a game of Cribbage. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Bruce’s quick wit, larger than life smile, and infectious laugh, grumbles and groans will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. His pure determination to make the best out of the life he was given is a legacy to be remembered.
He is survived by his daughters, RaeAnn (Michael) Smith Sr., Amicon Township; Renee (Odie) Hudacek, Maple, WI, and Lisa (Nicholas) Schouviller, Brooklyn Park, MN; grandchildren, Michael (Laura) Smith Jr., Jason (Kasie) Smith, Laura Burhans, Thomas (Lynzie) Burhans III, and Jessica Schouviller; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Carson, Richard and Arthur Smith, Nala, Briar and Olivia Burhans; sister, Sharon (Robert) Muttonen, Lake Nebagamon, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond Blakey; and sister, Gail Senn.
Due to CDC guidelines and Governor mandates, services for Bruce will be held at a later date.
Bruce’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Middle River Health for the care they offered Bruce during his twelve years stay.
