Catherine “Cathy” Ellen DeMars, 83, of Cocoa, FL, formerly of Superior, WI, died peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2022, on the Hospice Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. She was born in Superior, WI on April 8, 1939, the daughter of Arthur and Audrey (Tracy) Scharte.
Cathy attended the former Cathedral High School and finished out her schooling in a nursing program at Moose Lake in 1957. She dedicated her time to helping others in health care, retiring from Superior Memorial Hospital after thirty-six years as an ER Nurse.
Cathy was very active in her community and, throughout her life, was involved in the Superior Elks Club, Moose Lodge #606, CB Clubs, Snowmobile Clubs, and their annual “Somewhere in Time” weekends at the Grand Hotel in Michigan. She had been a previous member of the Superior Jaycees and played short-stop for women’s tavern leagues in Superior.
After retirement, Cathy and Dick moved to Cocoa, FL where she remained active in the Space Coast Jazz Society and the Brevard County Humane Society. She and Dick enjoyed their summers in Solon Springs, WI.
Her hobbies included knitting, music, gardening, camping, baseball, dancing, and baking, and she especially loved their beloved cat, Pusser. Above all, she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Laura (James) King, Patricia Williams-Bangsund, and Janice (Don) DeMars-Bettschen; grandchildren, Lindsey King, Courtlyn Johnson, Amanda (Jesse) King, Gill (Melissa) Williams, Christopher (Jessa) Harrison, Elizabeth Bangsund, Julieta Brunette, Dylan Bettschen, and Tyler Bettschen, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick; son, Rick Brunette; brother, Arthur Scharte; sister, Elaine Scharte-Engleman-Monday; her parents, and former husband, William Brunette.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 12, 2022, at Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue in Superior and will continue until the 11:00 AM Celebration of Life with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski officiating.
