Charles “Chuck” John Tomczak, Jr., 86 years old, longtime resident of Superior, WI, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Twin Ports Health Services in Superior. He was born on July 17, 1938, in Superior to Charles Sr. and Florence (Ignasiak) Tomczak and grew up in the North End of town.
After graduating from the former Superior Central High School in 1957, he joined the United States Navy where he attended the Great Lakes Naval Academy (Chicago, IL) and was later stationed in Newport, RI and served until he was discharged from the Navy in 1961. He returned to Superior after his military career and worked many jobs including conducting soil testing (construction of the Blatnik Bridge), to working as a printer (Duluth), to working in waste management (City of Superior). In 2000, after working over 24 years as an Operator at the City of Superior Wastewater Treatment Plant, Chuck decided to hang up his clipboard for the last time and retire...or so the family thought. Chuck could not sit still, so he eventually picked up a broom and started working janitorial services at the Superior Senior Center before landing another janitorial position with Amsoil Inc. in Superior. He was at Amsoil for a number of years before he finally said, "I'm done" and turned in his broom for the last time.
Chuck married the love of his life, Barbara Revoy, on June 12, 1965, after they were introduced by his cousin at the Checkerboard Bar. They spent over 56 years together building a home and raising a family in Allouez before Barb’s passing on January 22, 2022, from pancreatic cancer.
He is survived by his four children: Douglas (Alison King) Tomczak, Chicago, IL; Daniel (Deborah) Tomczak, Cary, NC; Joseph (Heather) Tomczak, Eveleth, MN; and Renee (Art) Evans, Swansboro, NC; six grandchildren, Nathaniel, John, Olivia, Noah, Joshua, and Greyson; his sister Suzie (Milt) Bounting; and several nieces and nephews.
Chuck was longtime members of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Superior; a member of the Moose Lodge 606 and enjoyed watching Laurel & Hardy movies together with Barb as a part of the Busy Bodies group; and enjoyed a good meal (especially coney dogs) or two around town. Family and friends always knew who to ask where there is a good place to eat around town.
You could always rely on Chuck for a good story about the North End, his Navy years, something strange he might have found at the sewage plant, or a Polish meal his ma might have made the family while growing up like prune soup or blood sausage...all while drinking a beer or two.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barb; brothers Clarence and Leonard Tomczak; and sisters Loretta LeCain, Florence Bozinski, and Carla Neilson.
Funeral and Memorial Services for Charles will be held in Superior in early October 2024.
