Christopher (Chris) Allyn Schmidt, 61, of Maple, WI, passed away at his home on November 6, 2021, after a debilitating illness. Chris was born on August 25, 1960, in Saint Paul, MN, and lived in the area for several years before coming to Maple in the late 70s.
In 1982, Chris earned a diploma in Auto Mechanics from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical Institute and later moved back to the Twin Cities. Rapid Rental in North Saint Paul, MN, hired him to sell and repair lawn mowers, snowmobiles and other motorized equipment. Chris became quite skilled at repairing small engines. After leaving Rapid Rental, Chris secured a job as a delivery driver with Burlington Air Express which took him all over the Twin City area.
Chris had a wide range of interests. When he was younger, he made his own wine and became a pretty good cook. In the 90s, Chris owned a Harley Davidson motorcycle that he once rode to Sturgis, SD, for their annual rally.
After moving to back to Maple in 2002, Chris took up competing in local demolition derbies. He won a few trophies for his determined efforts. He loved being out in the fresh air riding his four-wheeler or snowmobile on area ATV trails. He also raised a few pigs and discovered a knack for gardening. Over the past several years, Chris’s main passion was growing Siberian Red Longneck garlic (his ‘Darn Good Garlic’). He also found he had a talent for raising bees and entered the honey in the Douglas County Fair. When the Green Bay Packers played football, you could count on Chris to help cheer them on. Chris also tossed horseshoes with friends in a weekly league. When he wasn’t engaged in other activities, you could find Chris tinkering in the garage.
Chris is preceded in death by his mother, Kerry Drew of Maple and father, Duane of White Bear Lake, MN. Chris is survived his by brother, Tom (Renee) Schmidt, and sister, Gaye (Bob) Erkel all of Maple; sister, Bonnie Rae of Circle Pines, MN; nieces, Amanda (Nick) Korhonen of Poplar, and Victoria Schmidt, of Superior; nephew, Christopher (Stacy) Schmidt, and niece, Jennifer (Travis) Davis, all of Lafollette, TN. Chris will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
