Clarence L. Johnson

March 19, 1923 — January 6, 2011

Clarence Leroy Johnson, 87, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Duluth.
He was born on March 19, 1923 in Spooner, WI, son of Emmert and Emma Johnson.

Clarence served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II.

He married Gloria Basterash on July 29, 1949 in Superior, WI and celebrated sixty-one years of marriage.

Clarence worked for the Great Northern Railway for several years and then with the City of Superior in the Park and Recreation Department until his retirement after 33 years of service. During retirement Clarence and Gloria would enjoy their winter time getting away to warmer climates.


Clarence was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and making wood crafts in his garage. Clarence was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Clarence is preceded in passing by his parents, son, James and sister, Evelyn.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, sons, Michael Johnson and Tim (Shellie) Johnson; daughter, Deborah (Dan) Eastman; and several grandchildren; brothers, Howard, Lloyd, Willis and Arthur; sister, Leona and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the staff at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Duluth for the wonderful care they offered Clarence during his recent illness.

A Celebration of Life for Clarence will be held Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at The Shack Restaurant, 3301 Belknap Street, Superior where a brief service will be held at 7:00 PM with Chaplain Gary Meller.
