Clarice H. Brygger

February 9, 1934 — October 22, 2016

Clarice H. Brygger, 82, longtime area resident, currently of Lake Nebagamon, WI, died peacefully with her daughter Rebecca by her side, on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN. She was born in Duluth, MN on February 9, 1934, the daughter of Axel and Ruth (Edquist) Rask.

Clarice graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1952 and was involved in many activities including a member of the Girls Athletic Association, Music Ensemble, Red Cross, year book and school paper staff, Jr Class Play, Girls Club, Pep Club, National Honor Society and home room officer. She graduated from the University of Minnesota- Duluth in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of the Gamma Theta Upsilon (Honorary Geag. Frat), Elementary Council, U.M.D. Fellowship and Future Teachers of America.

From 1956 until 1972 she taught at the Earle Brown School in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis with thirteen of these sixteen years she taught first grade. The last three years she was given the opportunity to develop and teach a readiness room. This was a “bridge” for the children that had finished kindergarten but were not quite ready to enter first grade. This proved to be a very successful program. Also during her early years at Earle Brown she taught a summer school kindergarten because there was not room in the school to handle the kindergarten program. They developed a six week “crash” course during June and July for the children entering first grade in the fall. This was discontinued when the new kindergarten facilities were built. The years she spent at Earle Brown were very successful and fulfilling to Clarice as a teacher and she loved every minute of it.

Because of her marriage in 1972, it was necessary that she move to N. Wisconsin. She opted at this time just to do substitute teaching in the Northwestern school system. For the past fifteen years she taught in every classroom in our Elementary schools K-6, plus special classes of Phy. Ed., music, art, SLD and TMR.

For the last three years she also was a substitute teacher for the South Shore School District and taught in the Oulu school. Substitute teaching is entirely different from regular teaching, but had enjoyed the variety of experiences and challenges it provided. She was requested by many teachers, so evidently they felt she was doing a good job. These were positive opportunities and she enjoyed working with the entire staff.

Clarice entered the field of education because she enjoyed working with children and wanted to help them acquire skills needed to prepare them for a better life in our world today. In addition to the basics of book learning, they also need to learn values, and the ability to make sound judgments. She was conscientious about doing the best she could to help the students learn in a positive environment.

Clarice was a longtime active member of the Grace Baptist Church. She loved gardening, photography, skiing, needlecraft, traveling and camping.

Clarice is survived by her two children, Rebecca (Eric) Clark, Lake Nebagamon, WI and Scott (Nora) Brygger, Caramel, IN; three stepchildren, Laurel (Larry) Knowlton, ME; Karen (Jim) Thackler, Southern WI and David (Debbie) Brygger, Barnes, WI; thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Martha (Dennis) Hatfield and Ruth (Lyle) Olson.

Clarice was preceded in death by her loving husband, Pastor Joseph D. Brygger in March of 2015; her parents, Ruth and Axel Rask; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Rev. Harvey Fleck.
