Cornelius "Neil" "Or "Corny" L. Sampson

April 1, 1942 — February 22, 2016

Cornelius L. “Neil” or “Corny” Sampson, 73, longtime resident of Gordon, WI and formerly of East End of Superior, died Monday, February 22, 2016 at his home unexpectedly of natural causes. He was born on April 1, 1942 in Superior, WI to John and Gladys (Lord) Sampson.

Neil graduated from the St. Croix High School in Solon Springs, WI.

He served his country in the United States Army National Guard.

He most recently worked maintenance for the Douglas County Forestry Department until his retirement in 2005 and he also worked for the Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Company in the plating department for over thirty years.

Neil was a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. He was avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and ice fishing. He also enjoyed gardening, bingo, playing cribbage and smear, listening to music and enjoyed collecting antiques.


Neil is survived by his longtime special friend and companion, Ginny Lillo, Solon Springs, WI; three daughters, Terri Stone and Becky Haskins, both of Solon Springs, WI and Audra Sharpe, Superior, WI; eight grandchildren, Ronald “RJ” Sampson, Devin and Braydon Stone, Austin Haskins, Blake and Travis Sharpe and Kilee and Hannah Ondrik; two great-grandchildren, Abbigail Sampson and Brylee Stone; one sister, Sandra (Cecil) Zimmerman; one brother, Albert Sampson and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother John Sampson.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the St. Pius Catholic Church in Solon Springs, WI and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Kinney as celebrant.

Burial will take place at a later date at the St. Pius Cemetery, Solon Springs.

Neil’s grandchildren will be recognized as pallbearers.
