Danny W. Gipson

Danny Wayne Gipson, 75, resident of Poplar, WI, died on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Duluth, MN. Danny was born on February 10, 1949, to Johnnie Grant and Harlene (Paige) Gipson in Vandalia, Missouri. He was raised by his stepmom, Adele.

Danny grew up with four sisters Joleen, Linda, Diane and Sharon.

He married his first wife, Donna, and they had two children, Lisa and John. His second marriage to Kathy gave him twin daughters, Kris and Kelly and a “step” (none of us count that technicality) daughter, Stefanie.

He served his country proudly during the Vietnam war with the Company D, Second Battalion, 501st infantry. He completed two tours and earned the Bronze Star for Gallantry among many other awards. He served in the Army for 20 years, and when his military service was complete, he worked for the railroad for 19 years, finishing his time with the BNSF. He was then employed by Halvor Lines, Inc., as an over-the-road truck driver for 10 years.

Danny enjoyed retirement and he could often be found tinkering around in his garage, reading a book, or fishing. He also enjoyed cruising around Poplar on his four-wheeler. He loved being Grandpa to his grandchildren Alax, Elijah, Shane, Stevie, Brooke, Lily, and Maya.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Poplar; his children Lisa Gipson, Port Wing, WI, Stefanie Mortenson, Poplar, WI, Kris (Steve) Westerlund, Maple, WI, and Kelly (Keith) Isaacson, Superior, WI; Carolyn’s children Christopher Rantala, Nicholas Krivinchuk, and Zachary Krivinchuk, all of Poplar. He is also survived by sisters Sharon and Diane, numerous nieces and nephews, many friends, and his faithful canine companion, Jinx.

Danny was preceded in death by his parents; son John; sisters Linda Spies and Joleen Arrowood; and grandson, Hunter Mortenson.

His family wishes to thank the staff on the 18th floor at Essentia, especially Abbie, Lis, and Chris, for the care and respect that was shown to Danny.

We love you. We’ll never forget you. And yes, we’ll always remember to wear our seatbelts. Until we meet again.

A Celebration of Danny's Life will be held from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street in Superior. Graveside service to follow at 1:00 PM at Lake Nebagamon Cemetery, Lake Nebagamon, WI, where Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
