Delroy Roger Johnson, 85, longtime resident of Lake Nebagamon, died peacefully, Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at Essentia Health-Miller Dwan Medical Center in Duluth, MN with his loving wife by his side. He was born at home in Hawthorne, WI, July 31, 1935, the son of David L. and Mabel (Lidberg) Johnson.
A lifelong area resident, Delroy attended school in the Northwestern school district where he met the love of his life, Betty Ann Messany, on the school bus. He and Betty were united in marriage on February 5, 1955, at the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Superior and they celebrated sixty-six years of marriage before his passing.
Delroy later enlisted in the Superior National Guard and served his country honorably for several years and was called in to active duty at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington to be combat ready for the Berlin Crisis.
He was a member of the House of Hope congregation in Hawthorne, WI, and he especially enjoyed his church group “The Recycled Teens”.
Together with his three brothers, Delroy owned and operated DL Johnson Construction for many years. He later went on to work for Reuben Johnson & Son, Inc., and he carried a lunch that was lovingly made by Betty every day until his retirement in 2000.
Delroy was a longtime member of the Operators Union Local 139. He was very proud of his work and loved all his crew members, and he would proudly stop when passing any construction site in the area.
He loved tractors and trailers and “The Corner” AKA the Covered Wagon and enjoyed the occasional cross country snowmobile competition and 4-wheeling.
Above all, Delroy was a family man and a friend to many. He loved his family dearly and never missed a family or sporting event and videotaped them all. He loved mowing and weed whacking and volunteered his services to everyone, including the occasional flower bed. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him!
Delroy is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Johnson, Lake Nebagamon, WI; sons, Roger D. (Johanna) Johnson, and Gerald (Dawn) Johnson; grandchildren, Natalie, Aleda (Matt), Ryan, April, and Alex; great-grandchidren, Nolan, Grady, and Walker; sisters, Jeanie Kallinen and Audrey Wright; and many nieces and nephews.
