Donald Harold Smith

Donald Harold Smith, 96, died peacefully on Saturday, July 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at Villa Marina Health and Rehab in Superior, WI. He was born in Oak Park, Il, the son of Harold J. and Eleanor (Anderson) Smith, on December 12, 1927.

He joined the Navy during WWII and served his country honorably.

On February 17, 1951, he married Dorothy Shelton. They celebrated 41 years together before her passing on September 23, 1992.

Don was employed in the maintenance department at Parkland Sanatorium for many years. He was also a member of the now closed VFW Post in Parkland, WI.

He loved his family. He enjoyed baking and sending someone home with fresh cookies or cakes. Taking care of his gardens full of flowers and vegetables meant having something to share. Quiet times were spent fishing, listening to classical music, or watching the wildlife in his yard. He could often be found tinkering in his garage. If you borrowed something, better put it back in its original location. When his family lived in Illinois, trips to Robinson Lake and Tall Pines campground in Barnes, WI were favorite destinations. He will be missed.

Don is survived by his son Daniel Smith; daughter Luana (Ron) Harnstrom; daughter-in-law Pam Smith; grandchildren: Jeff  (Wendy) Fontano, Keith (Debbie) Fontano, Jennifer Pierce, Donny (Abby) Smith, and Autumn Smith; seven great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy; son Michael Smith; daughter Stephanie Smith; daughter-in-law Linda Smith; and dearly loved canine companion Duke.

Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 PM, Friday, July 19, 2024 at Downs-Lesage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue in Superior. Visitation will resume at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Downs-LeSage and will continue until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service with Gary Banker officiating. Burial will be in Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
