Donald “Smitty” E. Smith Jr., 59, longtime resident of Superior died Saturday, September 3, 2016 at his home.
He was born May 7, 1957 to Donald Smith Sr. and Darlene (Sleva-Carlson) Smith, in Superior.
He was a graduate of Superior Senior High School, class of 1976, and was employed as a Maintenance Supervisor with Superior Public Museums and took care of the museums for 25 years.
He was a member of the Great Lakes Shipping Preservation Society and the Eagles Aerie Club #80.
Donald was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed lifting, music and playing hockey. He especially enjoyed reaching out to help others and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his life companion of over forty years, Becky Jo Sturtevant of Superior, WI; three daughters, Tracie Jo (Markku) Lankimaki, Red Rock, Ontario, Stacie Mae (Richard) Buchanan, Superior, WI, Kascie Lynn Gondik, Superior, WI; his mother, Darlene (Kevin Brousseau) Carlson, Superior, WI; two brothers, David L. (Donette) Smith, Bennett, WI, Gordy (Shannon) Carlson, Superior, WI; one sister, Brenda Carlson, Duluth, MN; six grandchildren, Samantha Magnuson, Tyler Magnuson, Amber Magnuson, Jake Gondik, Chase Gondik, Sofia Lankimaki; mother in-law, Marlene Johnson, Superior, WI; his aunt, Patricia Smith-Wermter, Lake Nebagamon, WI and several other aunts and uncles.
Donald was preceded in death by his father, Donald Smith Sr.; step-father, Clarence “Bookie” Carlson; maternal grandparents, Emma and Floyd Sleva; his lifelong friend, Jeff Doolittle and his uncle, Floyd Sleva Jr.
A time of remembrance and celebration of Don’s life will be held Monday, September 12, 2016 from 1-4:00 PM in the S.S. Meteor Maritime Museum located on Barker’s Island, Superior,WI.
Honorary pallbearers for the service will be Mark Orville, Brad Levens, Shane Nelson, Jack Minor, Andy McConnell, David Smith, Matthew and Marcus Donahoe.
