Donna Marie Shykes

Donna Marie (Tullberg) Shykes, 70, lifelong Superior resident, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN, because she was ready. She was born in Superior on September 15, 1952, the daughter of Donald and Rose (Rampier) Tullberg.

Donna attended Lakeside Elementary school for grades 1-4. She attended Poplar Grade School for grades 5-8 and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1970.

Soon after graduating from high school, Donna moved to Tucson, AZ with several of her friends. That decision led her to amazing discoveries about desert and mountain life. She made and kept great relationships throughout the years and traveled to countless states, Canada, and Mexico with her friends.

Donna always enjoyed learning new things. Over the years she attended WITC many times and was most proud of getting on the Dean’s List at Lake Superior College at the age of 52! She received her associate degree and started her career working as a secretary for the St. Mary’s Duluth Clinic. She continued working in the medical field until her retirement on November 19, 2014.

Donna had the best sense of humor and loved being with her family and friends. She enjoyed camping in Gordon, WI and was always up for a pontoon ride on Spider Lake in Iron River. She was an avid reader and lover of crossword puzzles.

The thrill of Donna’s life was giving birth to her daughter, Josie Rose, on June 6, 1984. They both experienced the incredible bond between mother and daughter. After many “kitchen table talks” Donna and Josie learned to listen to each other and agree to disagree, always ending with a hug and kiss. She will be greatly loved and missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Josie Rose Shykes, Superior; Mother, Rose DeGraef, Iron River; brother Russell Tullberg, South Range; her sister Sherry (Keith) Tanula, Iron River; and many nieces and nephews.

Donna is preceded in death by her father Donald Tullberg; brother Bruce Tullberg; stepfather Alphonse DeGraef; sister Laurie (Jeff) Soderlund; and brother Wesley Tullberg.

A Celebration of Donna’s Life will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the Lakeside Town Hall, 3215 Poplar River Rd in Poplar, WI.
