Centenarian Dorothy Chaffey Palm, 102, Superior, passed away at the Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, January 21, 2011.
She was born on April 27, 1908 in Chaffey, Wisconsin to Fred and Mary Chaffey.
Her grandfather was John Chaffey, one of the early founders of Chaffey, Wisconsin.
She attended a one room school near her home and the former East High School in Superior.
While in high school, she lived with an aunt, Tillie Applegren and met her husband Charley at that time.
Charley and Dorothy were married May 1, 1926.
They resided in a home at the end of 31st Avenue, overlooking the Nemadji River.
Later, after the big depression, they built a home in East End Superior and resided there until after World War II when they purchased a dairy farm on Stinson Ave.
Milk was processed and delivered in glass bottles in the city.
When the refinery was built, Charley went to work there and retired from Murphy Oil.
After Charley passed away, in 1977, Dorothy had a house built on East 10th Street and resided there until she could no longer care for herself.
Dorothy was one of the charter members of the Superior Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, cats and she was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
In addition to her husband Charley, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Polly Hulter and brothers, Robert, Ray and Dave Chaffey.
Dorothy is survived by a son, Sidney (Florence) Palm, Superior; two granddaughters, Heidi (Perry) Erickson, Twin Cities, MN, Arla Williams, Tucson, AZ; four great-grandchildren, Jenna (Scott) Malikowski, Zachary Williams, Emily and April Erickson, all of the Twin Cities; one great-great-grandson, Oakley Malikowski, Twin Cities and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family wishes to thank all those at Villa Marina that took such good care of their loved one for so many years.
Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until the 11:30 AM Funeral Service on Friday, January 28, 2011 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Pastor Charles Plaster of Concordia Lutheran Church will officiate.
Burial will be in the Nemadji Cemetery.
