Douglas James Guimond

September 25, 1943 — April 12, 2014

Douglas J. Guimond, 70, South Range, died Saturday, April 12, 2014. He was born on September 25, 1943 in Duluth, MN to Joseph and Emily (Johnson) Guimond.

Douglas married Mary Golden on June 27, 1970 in Superior and celebrated 43 years of marriage. He served in the United States Air Force and was employed with St. Louis County, Twin Ports Grocery, and the Soo Line Railroad. He was a member of United Transportation Union and volunteered at the Douglas County Jail with the Literacy Council of Superior/Douglas County.

Doug was an avid gardener who enjoyed the outdoors, his tractors, and the land that surrounded the house he built. His care for all things growing extended to the love for his family and their life in Wisconsin. Beyond the landscape and forests of Wisconsin he enjoyed football, fervently cheering for and steadfastly committed to the Green Bay Packers. Doug knew how to have fun and whistle a great tune. He was a man who enjoyed projects, either just thinking or planning, building and constructing, or chopping and hauling. He could be counted on for help and as a confidant to both friends and family. He instilled his work ethic and compassion in his two children, and was a dedicated grandfather who cherished his grandchildren. Doug loved to dance with his wife.

In addition to his wife Mary, Douglas is survived by one son, Joseph (Amy) Guimond, San Diego, CA; one daughter, Kathryn Guimond, Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Matthew and Ava Guimond; two sisters, Bonnie (Jerry) Larson, Superior, WI, and Debra (David) Provost, Foxboro, WI; one half sister, June Mattison, Superior, WI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Smith.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM and will continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Service on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior with Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson, of St. William Catholic Church, officiating.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard following the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Douglas County, P.O. Box 891, Superior, WI 54880.
