Duane A. Carlson

Duane Alvin “Nobs” Carlson, 90, lifelong Superior, WI resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2024, at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Superior, WI on April 12, 1934, to Alvin and Freda (Peterson) Carlson.

Duane graduated from the former Central High School in Superior, the class of 1953. He was a United States Army Veteran and worked as a loader for CLM Corp, in Superior, for forty-two years, before retiring in 1997.

He was united in marriage to JoAnn Hansen on November 24, 1956. Together they raised three beautiful children and were about to celebrate sixty-eight wonderful years together before his passing.

Duane joined the Moose Lodge 606 in 1974 and was a very active member. He earned the highest degree, the Pilgrim Degree of Merit Gold Jacket. He was also a member of the VFW.

Nobs loved his sports being a hockey and little league baseball coach to stockcar racing watching his two sons and then his two grandsons’ race all over the area for over fifty years. He was an avid bowler and former president of the Men’s Bowling Association in Superior. He loved golfing and was in a golf league until he was 89! He was an avid Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan. He also enjoyed tending to his garden.

Nobs will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, JoAnn; children, Duane “Dew” Carlson, Linda (John) Grymala, and Darrell (Judy) Carlson, all of Superior; grandsons, Andrew “Andy” Grymala (Kalyn), and Cody Carlson; granddaughter, Julia (Jacey) Niznik; great-grandchildren Chase and Olyvia Grymala, and Loni Lu Niznik; brother, Dale “Gubba” (Patricia) Carlson, Superior; sisters-in-law, Mary Hansen and Peggy (Dick) Cowan; brother-in-law, Richard “Rick” Stuart; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Douglas, and Donald Carlson; sister, Delores Greely; and sister-in-law Betty Stuart.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street in Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery at a later date.
