Duane L. Johnson

March 24, 1931 — May 14, 2022

Duane L. Johnson, 91, lifelong area resident died peacefully, Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Twin Ports Health Services in Superior, WI. He was born in Duluth, MN March 24, 1931, the son of Lester and Margaret (Macdonald) Johnson.

Duane finished high school and graduated with a certificate from Minnesota Business School.  He and went on to serve his country honorably as a United States Marine. He served in the 1 st Marine Division, Fleet Marine, 1 st Marine Regiment 3 rd Battalion, Weapons Company and the 81 st M.M. Mortar Platoon. Duane received a purple heart when he was wounded in battle during the Korean Conflict.

He worked as a shift supervisor for the United States Postal Service for many years, retiring after more than twenty years of dedicated service.

He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #28 in Duluth.

Duane enjoyed being outside and spent many hours and days creating a lawn that was manicured and show worthy. He kept track every year of how many times he mowed the lawn and how many bags of leaves he raked at his home in Wrenshall. Duane enjoyed time with friends, especially the early morning breakfasts at the Oasis. Duane had a soft spot for poodles and was known to take Sherry, and then her puppy, Surprise, with him everywhere he went.

Duane went on to meet his longtime companion, Pat Scheer. As an only child the large Scheer family was a little overwhelming for him but welcomed him to their fold. He would spend time fishing, learning to play Gameboy with the grandchildren, and taking a pontoon ride on Fish Lake. Pat and Duane enjoyed many activities together, enjoying the sun in Arizona, playing cards and spending time with family.

Duane’s quiet ways, generosity and gentle heart will be missed.

He is survived by his family, Donna (Bill Anderson) Scheer, Duluth, MN, Debbie Scheer, Cloquet, MN, Julie Meyer, St. Cloud, MN, Penny (John Dandrea) Scheer, Superior, WI, Dale (Vicki) Scheer, Iron River, WI, Gary (Traci Bergquist) Scheer, Superior, WI, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
