Edward Nelson

November 19, 1932 — July 1, 2013

Edward Nelson, 80, longtime Minong area resident, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 1, 2013.

He was born on November 19, 1932 in Chicago, IL to Charles and Valentine (Shaughnessy) Nelson.

He attended Catholic grade school and high school in Chicago and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in Conservation from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Ed proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

He was employed as a Game Warden for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for twenty-one years before his retirement in 1985. His career was one he thoroughly enjoyed.


Ed was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minong, WI, the Outdoor Writer’s Association (writing columns entitled “The Great Outdoors”), Spooner Golf Club and a former member of the Spooner Muskie Club. He enjoyed his computer, reading, playing bridge, tying fishing flies, water color painting and woodworking. He was also an avid sportsman, loving to hunt and fish. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and friends, especially his three grandchildren.

He is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” (Todd) Smith, Rice Lake, WI; one son, Charles “Chuck” Nelson, Minong, WI; three grandchildren, Ethan, Emily and Ella; one sister, Donna (Tom) Howard, Wild Rose, WI as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth “Betty” in October 2012 and his parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until the 12 Noon Memorial Mass on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minong with Rev. Fr. James Kinney, as celebrant.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Minong where military honors will be accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard.

Honorary pallbearers are his beloved grandchildren and children, as well as fellow Conservation Wardens.
