Elaine I. Mencel

Elaine I. Mencel, 85, formerly of Weeks Avenue, Superior, died Thursday, October 22, 2009 at St. Francis Home in the Park.

She was born on September 11, 1924 in Minong, WI to Frank and Mary (Braun) Chapman.

Elaine was a 1942 graduate of the former Cathedral High School.
In 1947, she married her husband, Peter J. Mencel, Sr. and celebrated forty-two years of marriage before his passing in 1989. She is also preceded in death by four brothers.

Elaine was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She also was a member of the Cathedral Welcoming Committee and a former member of the CDA, Court #1190.

Elaine enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren who were the joy of her life. She enjoyed visiting with her friends over the phone or over a cup of coffee and playing cards with the “Weeks Avenue Ladies”.

Elaine is survived by two daughters, Susan (Gary) Hoffman, Superior, WI and Katherine Mencel, Phillips; two sons, Peter J. Mencel, Jr. and Robert (Laurie) Mencel, both of Superior, WI; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mary Wold, Sun City, AZ and Rosalie Fix, Burnsville, MN and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of St. Francis Home for the wonderful care Elaine received during her time there.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 26, 2009 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 10:30 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Cathedral Church or to Cathedral School.

The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
