Elayne M. Schnell, 102, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2024 with family by her side at Harbor Living in Hayward, WI. She was born the daughter of William and Ada (Hill) Byer on February 27, 1922 in Superior, WI.
Elayne graduated from Superior High School, class of 1939. She worked for many years at Superior Memorial Hospital as office manager.
She was a lifelong member of Cathedral of Christ the King, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and a member of the Duluth Women’s Club.
Elayne created beautiful, counted cross-stitch work that she shared with family and friends. Her skill with gardening turned their yard into colorful quilt of flowers. She loved to read and listen to her books on tape. Her favorite sports teams were the Green Bay Packers and UMD Bulldog hockey team. She was known for her great cooking. Most of all, she loved her large family and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughter Kathryn (David) Hanson of Trego, WI, daughter-in-law Ulla Gustafsson-Carlson of Washburn, WI, son Brad (Teriann) Carlson of Gordon, WI, brother, William (Kathy) Byer, Memphis, TN, step-son John (Sarah) Schnell of Summerfield, FL, step-daughter Anna (David) Hayner of Greenfield, MN, and step-daughter-in-law Mary Schnell of Superior, WI and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sons Thomas Carlson and Richard Carlson, daughter-in-law JoAnn Carlson, sister MaryJeanne Paulsen, sister and brother-in-law LaVonne (John) Hammerbeck, stepchildren Mark Johnson, James Schnell, Janet Schnell, and Jerry Schnell, and husbands, Kenneth Carlson, Duane “Tookey” Johnson and Raymond Schnell.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, 1111 Belknap Street in Superior and will continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Ricci as celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Superior.
