Elenor "Ellie" Aho

August 14, 1932 — June 1, 2019

Elenor (Ellie) Aho, 86, of Superior passed into eternal life on Saturday, June 1, 2019.  She was born August 14, 1932 to Norwegian immigrants Einar and Tina (Joten) Bakken in Noonan, North Dakota.  She grew up in Noonan, and the Clearbrook/Fosston MN areas.  After graduating from high school, she moved to Duluth MN, where she worked at Woolworth’s and Travelers Insurance.  Ellie loved music, and enjoyed dancing at the Dreamland Dance Hall, where she met her future husband, Felix Aho.  Ellie married Felix on December 20, 1952 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior.  They moved to Maple, WI, Felix’s birthplace, where they built their home on Hwy 2.  Felix sailed on the Great Lakes ore freighters while Ellie stayed home, raising four children and being an active member of Maple’s Faith Lutheran Church.

After Felix’s death in 1979, Ellie moved to Billings Park in Superior.  She was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, manned the coffee pot, and sewed quilts for local charities, including Harbor House Crisis Shelter. She was passionate about making quilts for the less fortunate, feeling everyone deserves a warm blanket. She loved hosting and visiting her children and grandchildren whenever possible.Ellie was proud of her home and loved ‘digging in the dirt’ in her flower beds. For many years, she eagerly traveled with bus tours to explore the US and Canada.

Ellie is survived by three children; Roger (Diane) Aho of Hudson, WI, Ruth (Paul) Heinecke of Mount Horeb, WI, and Myrna Ronchi of Superior; six grandchildren, Scott (Sally) Aho, Eric Aho, David (Rachelle Young) Heinecke, Luke Heinecke, Grant (Karli) Ronchi, and Rita Ronchi; three great-grandsons, Sam Aho, Ryan Aho and Jack Ronchi; and nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Jordis, her husband Felix, and a son, Gary.  Ellie was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, traveling to Norway three times with her daughter Myrna.  She became close to her Norwegian relatives and cherished the good times shared with them.

Funeral services will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Ave., Superior, on Wednesday, June 5.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be at Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Maple.  The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home is assisting the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Ave., or The Harbor House Crisis Shelters, 1531 Hughitt Ave., Superior.
