Elmer A. Colby, 92, formerly of E. State Rd., Maple, died Monday, August 10, 2009 in the Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on June 24, 1917 in Oulu, WI to John and Mathilda (Peltomaa) Colby.
He was a self-employed logger since the age of sixteen, retiring in 2001.
Elmer was on the Douglas County Board for twenty-six years and Town of Lakeside Chairman for thirty-eight years. He was also the baseball manager for the Lakeside ball team.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the casino and playing the state lottery. He was a Brewers and Packers fan and enjoyed watching political events on television. He also enjoyed his daily brandy.
Elmer was a former member of the Lakeside Baptist Church.
He is survived by his close friend and partner, Alice Lahti, Maple; a sister, Linda Hendrickson, Poplar; a brother, Emil Colby, Sheboygan, WI; four foster children, Janine Miland, Menomonie, WI, Sheila Bloomquist, Rochester, MN, Craig Haglund, Rochester, MN, Robbie Haglund, New Brighton, MN and his former wife, Nelma Colby, Lakeside, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Waino, William and Edwin and four sisters, Hilma, Ailie, Elaine and Ina.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, August 14, 2009 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.
Visitation will continue at 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service on Saturday, August 15, 2009 also in the funeral home.
Pastor John Knierin, of Faith Lutheran Church in Maple, will officiate.
Burial will be the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery, Maple.
Pallbearers for the service will be Craig Haglund, Jimmy Hill, Walter Olson, Larry Hendrickson, Mike Colby and Gordon Lahti.
