Elna Hermanson

November 28, 1915 — May 18, 2014

Elna Hermanson, 98, San Diego, CA, died peacefully in hospice care on May 18, 2014. She had lived independently at Ocean Beach until just after her 98th birthday at which time she suffered a fall, fracturing her arm, and was transferred to a board and care home and eventually hospice.

Elna was born on November 28, 1915, in Maple, WI, to Edward and Hulda Niemi and was the second oldest of six children. On January 6, 1942, she married Gunnard "Hermie" Hermanson. Together they raised two children, Maureen and Jeff, residing in Maple until Hermie's death in 1963. A few years later she moved to San Diego, CA, to be near family.

She worked in the laundry of the Sheraton Harbor Island, San Diego, until retiring at age 70. Then enjoyed 28 years at the beach.

Elna was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Hulda Niemi; her husband Gunnard; two brothers, William Niemi and Paul Niemi; one sister, Helen (Charles) Privette; and son Jeff Hermanson.

She is survived by two sisters, Alice (Kenneth) Erickson and Anna (Carl) Bong, both of San Diego; daughter Maureen (Jim) Young, La Mesa, CA; granddaughter Shana Frahm, Portland, OR; grandson Joshua (Nori) Frahm, London, UK; one great-grandson Dennibir, London, UK; and a dozen nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Poplar Cemetery on June 2, 2014, at 1:00 pm with Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in charge and Pastor Kyle of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Nebagamon, officiating.

Please join us for refreshments after the services at Lois Pollari's home: 11535 E. Waterfront Dr., Lake Nebagamon.

Honorary pallbearers are Steven Erickson, Randall Erickson, Peter Niemi, Wade Bong, Richard Bong, Edward Privette, Keith Pollari and Jim Pellman.

As Elna's granddaughter Shana so aptly described her life: "98 years of perfect health, good humour and a kind heart are about as good as it gets. I'm happy you had such a great run. We should all be so lucky."

Thank you to Sharp Healthcare Services and Sharp Hospice Care in San Diego and El Cajon Mortuary for assisting in transporting Elna to WI.

The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
