Emanuel “Pete” M. LaValley, 93, lifelong Superior resident, died Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Marywood of Benedictine in Duluth, MN. He was born in Superior on November 12, 1925, the son of Rene J. and Helen C. (Stanski) LaValley.
He graduated from East High School in Superior, and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army during the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of 2 purple hearts and a bronze star.
He was employed with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1986 after thirty-five years of service.
Pete was united in marriage to Irene Gella on February 12, 1947, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before her passing in 2014. He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior, where he was a longtime server and usher, and served as a board member for St. Francis Cemetery.
He is survived by his son, Dennis (Sharon) LaValley, Superior, WI; daughter-in-law, Karen LaValley; grandchildren, Tara (John) Ninmann, Kristin (Glen) Ritter, Andrew (Yvette) LaValley, Shawn (Michelle) LaValley, and Dustin (Jennifer) LaValley; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Rosie Pentecost, of Kentucky, and Jane Bishop, of California; brother, Lawrence LaValley, of Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Irene C. LaValley; son, James “Jim” LaValley; brothers, Alfred, Joe and Firmin LaValley; and sister, Ethel Dettlaff.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 27, 2019 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 East 4 th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.
Pallbearers for the Mass will be Shawn, Dustin, Andrew and Nathan LaValley, Glen Ritter and John Ninmann.
Noah Ritter and Kyle LaValley will be recognized as honorary pallbearers.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, where Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
