Emmett "Squeak" R. Newman

July 31, 1926 — February 21, 2016

Emmett R. Newman (Squeak) 89, formerly of Superior, most recently of Solon Springs, WI, died Sunday, February 21, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born in Superior, WI on July 31, 1926 to Evert and Selma (Longberg) Newman.

Emmett married Ruth Ann Zeilenga on June 18, 1999 in Hayward, WI and had recently celebrated sixteen years of marriage. Emmett and Dolores (Johnson), his first wife of twenty-seven years who passed away in 1975, took great pride in raising their family and singing to the glory of God throughout the Twin Ports region.

He was employed by the Braham Monument Co. for the majority of his career and the Newman Monument Co. for several years where he was in business with his son, Dale. Emmett also served his country in the United States Navy.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Solon Springs, WI, the Masonic Lodge Itasca #239 where he was a Past Master, the Shriners in Duluth, The Odd Fellows Lodge in South Superior and a member of the Rotary Club for many years. Emmett’s previous church affiliations were Pilgrim Lutheran Church, where he was baptized, Zion Lutheran Church, Concordia Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church all in Superior, WI.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann, Solon Springs, WI; four sons, Daniel (Laurie) Newman, Altoona, WI, James (Terri) Newman, Osseo, WI, Dale (Janet) Newman, Hartland, WI and Scott (Mel) Newman, Robbinsdale, MN; eleven grandchildren, Alexander Newman, Chicago, IL, Nicholas Newman, Afton, MN, Emma Newman, (Emmett’s namesake) Menomonie, WI, Sherawn Stewart (Nathan) Duluth, MN, Michael Ziegler (Melissa), Green Bay, WI, Shay Newman (Ann),WI, Kira Rank (Aaron), WI Samantha Newman, St. Helena, CA, Andrew Newman, Robbinsdale, MN, Lucas Newman, Robbinsdale, MN and Allison Mosley (Justin), Roberta, GA; one step daughter, Jan (Chip) Sobek, Dyer, IN; two stepsons, John (Chris) Van Gennep, Mokena, IL and Jim “Whitey” (Donna) Van Gennep, Mokena, IL; seven step grandchildren, Stacy and Jake Sobek, Nikole and John Van Gennep, Ryne, Rachael and Riley Van Gennep; six great-grandchildren: Felicia Stewart, Lainie and Aubrey Rank, Avery and Baron Newman, Carter Mosley and many nieces and nephews.

Emmett was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores in 1975; and his son, Christopher in 1993; his father, Evert and his mother, Selma; sister Edith (Miehlke).

Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Solon Springs, WI and will continue until the 1:00 PM funeral service with Pastor Jason Clifton officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be in Graceland Cemetery, Superior, WI at a later date.
