Eva C. Hughes, 102, lifelong Superior resident, went to the arms of our Lord on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in Essentia Health St. Mary’s, Duluth, MN.
She was born in Allouez, on December 13, 1908 to Triphon and Augusta (Specht) Wassenhove.
She graduated from the Superior Cathedral High School in 1927 and she went on to attend Duluth Business School after which she worked at Marshall Wells Hardware Wholesalers in Duluth.
On May 12, 1936, Eva married Charles G. Hughes in Superior. After her marriage she became a homemaker. After her children were raised, she went to work at the East End Public Library for twenty years before she retired.
Eva was baptized and a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was also a member of the St. Francis Altar Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters and NARFE.
Among her many pleasures were hosting holiday dinner parties which included appropriate frosted cutout and Belgian cookies. She also loved introducing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to her beloved cabin on Lake Ruth, the site of her honeymoon. She and the children would feed the fish and long hours of card playing, especially double solitaire.
Eva is survived by her son, Robert (Janet) Hughes, Sr., Superior; her daughter, Patricia (Robert McLoone, LaCrosse, WI, her “other son”, Jack (Charlene) Milroy, Superior and Florida; thirteen grandchildren, Marion (Charles) Engel, Richard Hughes, Mark (Angie) Hughes, Michael (Katie) Hughes, Mary (Scott) Ryan, Michael (Jean) McLoone, Charles (Polly) McCloone, Mark McCloone, Jennifer Hughes, Robert T. Hughes, Jr., Matthew Hughes, Stephen (Laura) Hughes, Adam (Nicole) Hughes; twenty-three great-grandchildren; three nephews, James Podvin, Richard (Judy) Ohvall and James (Jill) Morman; three nieces, Jean (Clarence) Brakke, Virginia (Stanley) Repp and Mary Ellen (Tom) Mihajlov and one-daughter-in-law, Evelyn Hughes.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1982, her son George Hughes; her brother and sister-in-law, George and Margaret Wassenhove and her sister, Mary Podvin and her sister and brother-in-law, Gene and Herman Morman.
Eva’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospice Unit in Duluth for their wonderful care of Eva and her family.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, September 19, 2011 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. James Tobolski and Fr. Daniel Dahlberg will concelebrate.
Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Eva’s grandchildren.
Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
