Florence L. Steffan, 85, lifelong Superior resident, passed away peacefully at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth on Thursday, February 4, 2010 surrounded by family.
She was born February 25, 1924 in Superior, WI to Anton and Valeria
( Zawadki) Michalski.
Florence worked for the Board of Education in Superior until she was married on January 20, 1951 to Peter M. Steffan. She took time off to begin a family before a thirty year career with the City of Superior. Starting in April 1958 as a secretary in Public Works, she advanced to Administrative Secretary for the Mayor and City Attorney, retiring as City Clerk on May 27, 1988.
She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, Catholic Charities and Catholic Daughters. She was an active volunteer at St. Francis Nursing Home. Florence was always giving her time to family and friends. She had a caring heart that she shared with anyone who touched her life. Her beautiful smile and her wink of an eye would warm your heart.
Florence is survived by her loving husband, Peter M., Superior; sister, Adrianne Kayfes of Rocky River, OH; brother, Raymond (Veronica) Michalski, Superior, WI; sons, Mark Steffan, Carbondale, IL and Timothy (Sandra) Steffan, Superior, WI; daughter, Susan (Richard) Hoglund , Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren, Kari (Michael G.) Retzer, Cannon Falls, MN, Nicholas Steffan, Carbondale, IL, Alainy and Peter D. Steffan, both of Superior, WI, Rich Hoglund, Chanhassen, MN, Brad Hoglund, St. Paul, MN Laura Hoglund, Duluth, MN; great-grandchildren, Michael J. and Miranda Retzer, Cannon Falls, MN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Florence is preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Valeria Michalski.
Visitation will begin at10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court #1190 Rosary at 10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 AM with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Pallbearers for the service will be Mark, Timothy, Nicholas and Peter D. Steffan and Michael J. and Michael G. Retzer.
The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
