Frederick W. Glibbery

November 28, 1933 — July 10, 2016

Mr. Frederick Glibbery, 82, long time resident of Duluth and Superior, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at St. Mary’s Essentia Health in Duluth, MN. He was born the youngest child of Frederick and Marie Glibbery of London Road in Duluth on November 28, 1933 behind sisters, Jean, Shirley, and Virginia (Ginny).
Frederick grew up in Duluth and graduated from Central High School in 1951. He went to the University of Minnesota-Duluth for two years before enlisting in the United States Army, where he was a telegrapher stationed in the Marshall Islands during H-bomb testing.
Fred's lifelong passion was trains. He began working for the Duluth-Mesabi & Iron Range Railroad at the age of 18, as a clerk going back to this job after he got out of the Army. He started working for the Great Northern Railroad in 1959.
In 1960, he married Marilyn Kay Carlson of Duluth. Together they had his only child, Paul. They moved to accommodate his job with the railroad, which took them to St. Cloud and St. Paul, MN and West Burlington, IA. He began working for Burlington Northern after the merger with Great Northern and Chicago Burlington Quincy Railroad in 1970, eventually taking a job as Material Manager, and moving back to the Duluth-Superior area. His wife, Marilyn, had battled cancer since young adulthood, and died of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1984. He was a very caring, loyal, and loving husband during their marriage and her illness.
He remarried, and spent the rest of his life in the Duluth-Superior area, retiring in 1993 after 40 years of working with the railroad.
One of his main hobbies after retirement was an extensive model train layout in his basement. He also enjoyed traveling, volunteering, photography and being a conductor on the North Shore Scenic Excursion Tour until recently due to health issues.
He was also a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Duluth.
Fred is survived by his son, Paul Glibbery and daughter-in-law Darla, of Billings MT, sisters Shirley Gurholt of Columbia SC, and Ginny Sundeen of Sun City Florida; two nieces and eleven nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Marie, his first wife, Marilyn, his second wife, Carolyn, and his oldest sister, Jean.
Private funeral services are being planned at a later date.
The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
