George Joseph Groos

November 21, 1952 — December 29, 2018

George Joseph Groos, longtime South Range resident, went to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN at 66 years of age. He was born in Escanaba, Michigan on November 21, 1952, the son of Robert and Mary (Koebel) Groos.

George graduated from Holy Name High School in Escanaba and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technical University in 1976. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy as a ship driver and later worked for Minnesota Power, Enbridge, and Lake Superior Consulting before his retirement in 2016.

George was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church. He was passionate about his salvation and enjoyed fellowship and studying the Bible. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed woodworking, boating, hiking, biking, and golfing. He deeply enjoyed volunteer work and was a jack of all trades and master of them all.

He is survived by his daughters: Jennifer Pinto of California, Connie DaSilva of New York, and Xylina Groos of California. He has one grandchild, Elektra Ringer, the daughter of Xylina. He is preceded in death by his parents and survived by his five sisters and brothers-in-law; Cathy and Mike McCarthy, Marilyn and Steve Banner, Fran and Tom Swift, and Patty and Mark Bryant, all of Michigan and Jeanne and Steve Nelson of Minnesota.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Lakeside Baptist Church, 3176 S. Middle River Road, South Range, and will continue until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service with Pastor Chuck Ells officiating. Burial with military honors will immediately follow the funeral service at Lakeside Cemetery. A BBQ luncheon will follow the burial.

In lieu of flowers, please make cash gifts or checks payable to Lakeside Baptist Church. All monetary gifts will be forwarded to George’s two favorite missionaries.
