George F. Oesterreich

February 26, 1934 — September 8, 2021

George F. Oesterreich, 87, lifelong Superior resident, passed away peacefully, Wednesday September 8th, 2021, at Clark County Rehabilitation and Living Center in Owen, WI. He was born in Superior, February 26th, 1934, the son of George and Nina (Johnson) Oesterriech.

George served his country honorably in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He worked as the Mechanical Foreman at Midwest Energy Resource Center beginning in 1976 until his retirement 20 years later. George was a member of the Nemadji Men’s Golf Club, the Superior Elk’s Lodge 403, and the Moose Lodge 606 in Superior.

George loved sports and was proud to watch his granddaughter play soccer and his grandson and nephews play football as Superior Spartans. He was a loyal Green Bay Packer fan, and spent time in the outdoors golfing, fishing, and hunting. He drove a stock car for Shamrock Bar and Pizza as part of the Northland Racing Association and the Duluth-Superior Racing Association in the 1950’s. In his early years he played minor league baseball on the Superior Blues as a catcher and was a competitive ski jumper.

Above all, George was a loving family man and loyal friend. He was kind, caring and would be the first one to help you out if you needed it. He was dearly loved and respected by all who knew him and will be missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary (Todd) Balcer; granddaughter Sara Balcer; stepdaughter, Terri Champaigne Kalan; stepson Tom (Robbin) Champaigne; step-grandchildren, Cameron (Nikki) Kalan, Erica Champaigne; great granddaughter, Isabella Zielinski; half-brother, Robert (Kathleen) Rivard; and several nieces and nephews.
