George E. Van Vynckt, 81, a lifelong Superior resident, died Friday, January 8, 2010, unexpectedly in his home. He was born on June 6, 1928 in Superior to Octaaf and Emily Van Vynckt.
He graduated from the former East High School in 1946 and went on to attend college for three years.
George married Kathlyn M. Heirman on February 21, 1948 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Superior and celebrated sixty-one years of marriage.
He had been employed with the former Great Northern Railroad for a few years before he became the co-owner/operator of M. Van Vynckt Wholesale Distributors. He co-owned the business for twenty-five years before retiring in 1990.
George served on the County Board of Supervisors from 1963 to 1973. He enjoyed polka music, sports, bowling, his occasional trips to the casino but he most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Eagles Club, the Moose Club and the Belgian Club.
In addition to his wife Kathlyn, George is survived by his children, Linda (Dennis) Huber, Chetek, WI, Pat (Don) Demulling, Star Prairie, WI, Jerry (Diane) Van Vynckt, Superior, Sue (Al) Chesky, Superior, Joseph (Sue) Van Vynckt, Superior; one sister, Elise Marion, Superior; ten grandchildren, Patti, Kacy, Monica, Justin, Kyle, Nikki, Lindsay, Joey, Ryan and Alphonse and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lee Ellis.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Pastor Don Kania, as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
