Gerald K. Nelson, 81, lifelong area resident, died Monday, July 24, 2017 in Superior, WI.
He was born January 27, 1936 in Superior, the son of Kampton and Grace (Granfors) Nelson.
He was a graduate of the Superior East High School, class of 1954.
After high school Jerry served his country honorably in the United States Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, CA at Miramar Naval Base for six years, spending one year in Japan aboard an Aircraft Carrier, the Hancock.
He married Nancy Swanson on May 12, 1956, and they recently celebrated sixty-one years of marriage before his passing.
Jerry worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance, and retired from Sentry Insurance after twenty-five years. After retiring, Jerry drove school bus for fifteen years. He had very special children on his bus.
He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior, WI.
Jerry loved doing fun things with kids of all ages, from hockey cracks to wood crafts. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He will be missed by many who knew him.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Nancy Nelson, Superior, WI; son, Scott Nelson, Portland, OR; son-in-law, Erik (Christine) Nelson, Duluth, MN; grandchildren, Andy and Nicholas Nelson, Duluth, MN and Cooper and Morgan Nelson, Portland, OR; sisters-in-laws, Margaret Lane, New Hope, MN and Carolyn Swanson of Michigan; brother-in-law, Tom Lane, New Hope, MN and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Deanna Lynn and Christie Jo Nelson; grandson, Christopher Nelson; sister-in-law, Nylene Braatz; brothers-in-law, Dick Braatz and George Swanson.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, Thursday, July 27, 2017 in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 820 Belknap Street, Superior, and will continue until the 1:00 PM funeral service, with Pastor Victor St. George officiating.
