Gertrude Pauline “Gert” (Grandish) Diamon, 86, longtime Iron River, WI resident, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 3, 2010 in Superior, WI. She was born on April 8, 1924 in Herbster, WI; graduated from high school in Herbster; and went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
Gert married the love of her life, Chuck Diamon, on May 4, 1946. They enjoyed forty years together before Chuck passed away.
Gert enjoyed a long professional career with the Security State Bank in Port Wing, WI and Iron River and the Iron River Northland Savings and Loan. After retiring from the banking industry Gert worked as a realtor for Heritage Real Estate and was also employed by Michael’s Catholic Church in Iron River.
She was a longtime active member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Iron River for over forty years where, for a period of time, she served as secretary and was a member of St. Michael’s Altar and Rosary Society. Gert was an active member of the local community where she participated in the Green Thumb Club, Rebekah Lodge #192, Iron River VFW Auxiliary, Hanson-Maki American Legion Post Auxiliary. In addition, she participated in the Northwest Community Choir and served as the Iron River Sanitary District Commissioner.
Gert and her husband Chuck along with Fred and Pauline Rothen felt the history of Iron River was important to the community and were instrumental in starting the Iron River Historical Museum.
Gert is survived by her three sons, Michael (Mary Delle) Diamon, David (Jennifer) Diamon, Dan (Cam) Diamon; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck; her parents Pauline and Vaso Grandish; four sisters, Marie Burnside, Anne Strand, Helen Kirk and Elizabeth Cox and two brothers George and Peter Grandish.
Visitation will at 10:00 AM Thursday, October 7, 2010 until the 12 Noon Mass of Christian Burial in St. Michaels Catholic Church with a Scripture Service at 10:00 AM Rev. Fr. Michael Crisp will be celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Michaels Cemetery.
