Hanya “Anna” Bykowicz, 95, Superior resident, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN following a brief battle with acute leukemia. Anna was born on February 22, 1922 in Rewiatycze, Belarus to Anton and Elizabeth (Kozak) Chizh.
Anna worked for Parkland Health Care Center for many years. She was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, choir and KOLO Circle. She also was a member of the Teamsters Laborers Union and the Superior Women’s Garden Club. She enjoyed needlework, knitting, crocheting, cooking and entertaining.
Anna is survived by one brother, Alexsey Chizh, Belarus; several relatives including special cousin, Helen (Louis) Galick, Edmonton, Canada and many nieces and nephews in Belarus, Canada and the United States and her longtime friends and caregivers, James and Gloria Jones, Oulu, WI.
She is predeceased in death by her husband John and her parents and two sisters, Mariya Zhurko (Ivan) and Olga Yakovlev (Ivan), sister-in-law, Sophya Chizh and longtime companion Harold Kangas.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 6, 2017 at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Gary New Duluth and continue until the 12:00 PM funeral service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Superior.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff at Stardusk Assisted Living and Middle River Health & Rehabilitation Center for the care they provided to Anna during her stay.
