Harold “Emmett” Swanson, 81, Brule, WI, died Friday, November 19, 2010 unexpectedly in his home. He was born on July 17, 1929 in Lake Nebagamon, WI to Harold O. and S. Esther (Gemmill) Swanson.
He graduated from the former Columbia High School in Iron River and went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Education from the former Superior State Teacher’s College.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He married Dolores Ronchak on August 28, 1965 in Brule and celebrated forty-five years of marriage.
Emmett was employed as an elementary school teacher, an assistant principal and retired as principal from the Hayward School District after many years of service.
He was a longtime member of the Brule Presbyterian Church; he was a 32nd Degree Mason and was installed at the Superior Masonic Lodge #236. He received his fifty-year pin in May 2010. In addition to the Superior Masonic Lodge, Emmett was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hayward where he served as Worshipful Master; a member of Ashland Masonic Lodge #210 and the Barnes Masonic Lodge #365 where he had previously served as secretary and treasurer for ten years. He was also a member of the Zor Shrine Club in Hayward and the Superior Shrine Club. He was member of the First Musky Cycle Patrol of Hayward, the International Order of the Eastern Star in Hayward, Ashland and Superior; the Knights Templar of Wisconsin and a member of the Red Cross of Constantine; the Superior Elks Lodge #403 and the Bong-Hoftsted American Legion Post #409.
Emmett was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt.
He was the superintendent from 1977 to 1999 for the Cedar Island Estate on the Brule River following his father’s retirement who was superintendent for fifty-two years.
He also served as Town Chairman for the Town of Highland for many years.
In addition to his wife Dolores, Emmett is survived by one sister, Mildred Canepa, Baraboo, WI; two brothers, James (Anna) Swanson, Brule, John “Jody” (Doreen) Swanson, Brule; special longtime friends, Kingman and Eva Loomis, Barnes, WI and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM Friday, November 26, 2010 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with a Masonic Service conducted by Superior Lodge #236 and fellow Masons at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at 10:00 AM Saturday, November 27, 2010 until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service in the Brule Presbyterian Church in Brule, WI. Rev. Richard Blood and Rev. H. Duane Aslyn will co-officiate.
Burial will be in the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Brule.
