Harvey G. Bong, 89, lifelong Superior area resident, died Friday, May 30, 2014 at Essentia Health, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Hospice Unit, Duluth, Minnesota surrounded by his family.
He was born in Superior, Wisconsin on February 17, 1925, the son of Henning and Dagmar (Peterson) Bong.
Harvey served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Asian Theater in the south pacific on the USS Norton Sound.
Harvey was employed by the City of Superior as a Heavy Equipment Operator for over forty years retiring in 1987.
He married Maxine Lindholm on July 21, 1951 and would have celebrated sixty-three years of marriage this July.
Harvey was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior; the VFW, Bloomberg Post 847.
He loved hunting partridge, fishing, picking blue berries so Maxine could make blueberry pies.
Harvey was a member of the Superior Men’s Bowlers Association and enjoyed many years with the local Bowling Lanes.
He loved playing four point smear with his wife Maxine at the Belgium Club. Harvey also enjoyed solitaire as a pastime; and playing cribbage with his family. He also enjoyed Sunday drives with his wife Maxine.
Harvey enjoyed country music and was an avid Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packer Fan.
He is survived by his wife Maxine, Superior; three sons, Greg (Lucy) Bong, Athabasca, Alberta Canada, Jeff (Shari) Bong, and Kevin (Wendy) Bong, both of Superior; two granddaughters, Michelle (Matthew) Turner, Hudson, Ontario and Randi Bong, Superior.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Belva Evans.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, in Superior and continue until the 2:00 PM Funeral Service with Pastor Sarah Kerkes, officiating.
Burial will in Greenwood Cemetery.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post # 435 Honor Guard.
Pallbearers for the Service will be Terry White, John Swanson, Doug Beck, Ron Blaire, Butch Krisak and Merrill Erickson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harvey’s granddaughters, Michelle and Randi.
The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
