Helen M Bachand, 99, lifelong Superior area resident, died Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at St. Luke’s Hospice in Duluth, MN surrounded by her family. She was born on September 20, 1919 in Superior, WI, the daughter of Randal and Lucy (Harrington) Gordon.
She graduated from Cathedral High School and was employed as a secretary for the Chamber of Commerce for 16 years.
Helen got married on July 23, 1941 to Stephen Bachand in Superior, WI and they would have celebrated seventy years of marriage before his passing in July of 2011.
She was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and Altar Society. She is also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1190, former President of the St. Francis volunteers and a member of the Woman’s Club of Superior. Helen enjoyed exercising and swimming at the YMCA. She also loved reading and traveling.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Mary “Betsy” (Charles E.) Buran, Iron River, WI, Lucy Ann (Terry) Bishop, Superior, WI; two sons, Dr. Stephen M. (Dr. Nancy Perry) Bachand, Colorado Springs, CO, Dr. William Randal (Rhonda) Bachand, Evans, GA; ten grandchildren, Chris Bachand, Eric Bachand, Chad Buran, Michael Buran, Stephanie Ronchi, Nicholas Bachand, Christina States, Elizabeth Taylor, Nicole Johnson and Philip Bishop; twenty-one great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by husband Stephan, her parents, Randal and Lucy Gordon, two sisters, Dorothy and Betty; two brothers, Kenneth “Spike” and Randall “Pete” Gordon.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM with a CDA Rosary on Monday, June 3, 2019 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Superior.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Helen’s name to Cathedral Church or School or the Superior/Douglas County YMCA.
