Helen Julia Mikrot Mattila, 82, South Range, WI resident, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior. She was born in Automba, MN on September 28, 1935 to John and Lydia Laine.
She graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1953 and married Isadore Mikrot and settled in South Range, WI and started the family farm in 1956 which is now operated by her son, Michael. She attended WITC and graduated in 1971 and also graduated from the Superior/Douglas County Leadership Program in 1996.
She began working for Catholic Charities in Superior in 1972 and then became the Director of Retired Senior Volunteer Program in 1980 where she remained until she retired in 1999 after twenty-eight years with the agency. She went back to work in 2000 as the Executive Director of Inter Faith Caregivers of Superior/Douglas County and worked in that capacity until 2003.
She served as an officer in the American Business Women’s Association, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 1190, and Wisconsin State R.S.V.P. Director’s Association. She was a board member of the Douglas County Aging Resource Center, Inter Faith Caregivers, Wisconsin Coalition of Aging Groups, Superior Community Credit Union and a choir member of her church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband Isadore Mikrot passed in 1986. She then remarried in 1988 to Harold Mattila and he passed away in 2001. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, a grandson Andrew Mikrot, niece and nephews.
Helen is survived by her sons, Michael (Jackie) Mikrot, Richard (Terri) Mikrot, both of South Range, WI; daughters, Joanne (Daniel) Osterlund and Jeanne (John) Greely, also of South Range, WI; five granddaughters, six grandsons and seventeen great-grandchildren, her siblings and several favorite nieces and nephews and lots of friends.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at St. Anthony Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Adam Laski as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Superior. Pallbearers for the service will be Michael Mikrot, Jr., Phillip Mikrot, Tom Mikrot, John Greely, Kyle Carlson and Joe Goettl.
