Herbert W. "Wally" Tribbey, Sr. 88, lifelong Superior resident, died Friday, May 8, 2009 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born on July 23, 1920 in Superior to William Arthur and Iva (Weaver) Tribbey.
He served two tours in the United States Army during World War II.
He married Betty Winkel on August 30, 1941 and they celebrated sixty-six years of marriage before she passed away on May 14, 2008.
Wally was employed as a switchman for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroads.
He was a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church and a member of the Switchman's Union. Wally enjoyed fishing and hunting and his children and grandchildren will remember him as a gentle, loving father and grandfather.
Wally is survived by one son, Herbert W. "Wally" (Betty) Tribbey, Jr., Iron River, WI; one daughter, Sharyn (Tom) Vengrin, Amnicon Lake, WI; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Betty, Wally is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Bert L., Melvin M. and Edwin A. Tribbey and two sisters, Donna J. Johnson and Iva M. Perkins.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Christ Lutheran Church, Superior. Visitation will continue at 12:30 PM on Friday, May 15, 2009 until the 1:00 PM Funeral Service also in Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor David Schoessow, officiating.
Pallbearers for the service will be Wally's grandchildren, Paul Tribbey, Beth Paquette, Patrick Tribbey, Andy Vengrin, Kory Telfer, Matthew Vengrin and Lyndon Paquette.
A Graveside Service at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Somerset, WI will take place at a later date.
Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Wally's family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Golden Living Center for the care and compassion Wally received during his stay there.
