Hope L. Swenson

Hope L. Swenson 92, of Poplar, Wisconsin, died May 27, 2019. She was the last of four siblings born to Mabel M. and Howard L. Metcalfe of Arkansaw, Wisconsin. She was born in their home October 13, 1926.

She graduated from Arkansaw High School in 1944 and from Wisconsin State University of River Falls, Wisconsin, in 1947 with a degree in education that she used her entire life.

She married Clifford K. Swenson of Poplar, Wisconsin, in August 9, 1957 who has preceded her in death. She is survived by her two sons, Lee S. Swenson (Chris) of Hermantown and Clifton P. Swenson (Kari) of Plymouth, Minnesota. Also survived by her grandchildren Nathaniel (Anne) Swenson, Rebecca Swenson, Elizabeth Swenson, Oliver Swenson, Graham (Gabby) Swenson, and Madeline Swenson. She has one great grandchild Evan Swenson.

During Hope’s teaching career, of over 41 years, she taught at Browns Valley, Minnesota, Superior, Spooner, Maple, and Port Wing, Wisconsin. After retirement she spent countless volunteer hours in the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center as well a reading to pre-school children in Superior through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

She was a member of Old Brule Historical Society, the Chequamegon Area Retired Educators, and Alpha Delta Kappa. She was an active attendant of the Mission Covenant Church of Poplar where her funeral will be held on Saturday June 1, 2019. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM and will continue until the 11:00 AM Celebration of Life. Pastor Darrell Nelson will officiate and a luncheon to follow.
