Hugo Salomaki

Hugo Salomaki, 93, lifelong Maple resident, currently of Lake Nebagamon, WI died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center, Hawthorne, Wisconsin.

He was born in Maple on November 24, 1917, the son of John and Hedwig (Nuturra) Salomaki.

Hugo served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre, Middle Eastern Theatre, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes Rhineland in Central Europe and he received three overseas service medals.

He was employed at the former Globe Elevator and retired from the Soo Line Railroad after many years of service.

Hugo was a generous man, donating the land for the Faith Lutheran Church in Maple.

Hugo was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and an avid outdoors man who loved fishing, gardening, hunting, snowmobiling and he enjoyed shooting pool and playing horseshoes.

He is survived by a daughter Signa (Chuck) Groves, Washburn, WI and their children, Terry, Scott, Susan, Kerri and Peter; a daughter, Sandra (Richard) Anderson, Lake Nebagamon, WI and their children, Cheryl, Richard, Jr., and Monica; a son, Roger (Bonnie) Salomaki, Lake Nebagamon and their children, Kimberly and Shannon; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; a special nephew, Larry Ronning, Maple and several other nieces and nephews. Hugo is also survived by friend and caregiver, Lucille Little.

Hugo was preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn (Johnson), his second wife Betty (Ronkainen), a daughter, Judy; his parents, two sisters and five brothers.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior. Visitation will continue at 10:00 AM on Friday, September 23, 2011 until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service in Faith Lutheran Church in Maple with Pastor John Knierim, officiating.

Interment will be in Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Maple where Military Honors will be accorded by the Poplar American Legion Post #409.

Pallbearers for the service will be Don and Marty Ronkainen, Chuck Groves, Scott Sauve and Peter Groves. Hugo’s grandchildren will be recognized as honorary pallbearers.
