Jack H. Gronquist, 81, South Range resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, October 1, 2013. He was born in Maple, WI on August 30, 1932 to Samuel and Emma Gronquist.
He attended schools in Superior and graduated from the former Central High School in 1951. He joined the United States Air Force on August 28, 1951 serving in Korea, Germany, Vietnam and Turkey. He retired as Captain on June 8, 1972, having been a pilot and working in the supply field, serving twenty-one years. He later worked maintenance jobs at Royalton Manor and Amnicon Falls State Park.
Jack and Mary Ann Tuura were married on October 13, 1956 at Oulu Lutheran Church and would have celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage this month.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Agnes Kindel, brother Clifford and aunts and uncles.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann; son, Daniel (Linda) Gronquist,; daughter, Julie (George Pleau) Gronquist; four grandchildren, Melisa (Mark) DeToffol, Jennifer (Jason) Rygg, Jessica (Chris) Knutson and Mari Gronquist; seven great-grandchildren, DeShon Pleau, Donovan DeToffol, Maddilyn Bast, Nolan and Carson Knutson and Trevor and Alayna Rygg; one brother Howard “Butch” (Bonnie) Gronquist; brother-in-law, Richard (Barbara) Tuura and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and the Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care and concern during his final days.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior and continue until the 11:00 AM memorial service.
Military Honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard immediately following the service.
Burial will be in the Ever Rest Cemetery in Waino, WI.
