Jack Marl Harnstrom, Sr., 88, Superior resident, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital Hospice in Duluth, MN. He was born in Superior on April 27, 1927 to Carl and Miriam (McFarlin) Harnstrom.
Jack attended Superior schools, he then went and served his country in the United States Army. After his service, he and two of his buddies drove the first Model A up the Alcan highway to Alaska, where he lived for seven years, working a number of jobs and enjoying the beautiful state. Upon his return to Superior, he met and married Imelda Zielinski, the couple was married for fifty-seven years and raised their three children.
He worked for the City of Superior for thirty-three years and he also owned and operated his own disposal business.
Jack enjoyed collecting antique and classics cars. He enjoyed going to car shows far and near with his friends and had some rare cars that won trophies over the years. He also enjoyed his motorcycles and dune buggy. In later years, he and Imelda enjoyed going for long rides, dining out and of course the casino. Jack was a generous man, always giving money to the less fortunate and he loved giving dollar bills to the little kids he would meet.
Dad was a dedicated husband who loved his wife and provided well for his family.
Jack is survived by one son, Jack Harnstrom, Jr.; two daughters, Nancy (Bob) Anderson and Jill Harnstrom (JoAnn Leszcynski); son-in-law Jonathan Hill ;six grandchildren, Joshua (Sara) Parr, Rick Hammer, Erick and Valerie Schlais and Angel and Jo Jo Hammer; four great-grandchildren, Evan, Kasen, Kaleb and Sydney; his caretaker, Carole Kohl and numerous nieces, nephews, as well as brothers and sister-in-laws and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Imelda, his parents, brothers James and George, sister Jean Flynn, and son-in-law Richard Hammer.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday, April 23, 2016 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. 5th Street, Superior and continue until the 10:00 AM memorial service.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior.
