Jackie David Salo (79) lifelong resident of Superior, WI passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN, with his daughters by his side.
He was born on September 3, 1944, to Eino A. and Dorothy M. (Talley) Salo in Superior, WI. During his childhood, he spent a short time living at Fairlawn Mansion as an orphan with his two older sisters. When his family reunited, they traveled throughout the country, but something he remembered most was how he loved helping on his Uncle Gene’s family farm.
He often shared stories about his time working as a merchant marine, sailing the Great Lakes and overseas to different countries. He then worked for Reuben Johnson as a laborer from 1981-1999 and retired at age 55.
At age 44, Jack became a proud father to his twin daughters, who he devoted his life to with unconditional love and support. In 2016, he had the honor of becoming a grandpa, and it was a title that he cherished dearly. He took pleasure in spending time with his granddaughter, Elliana. Together they would plant and pick vegetables from the garden and read books to one another. He also loved going to her sporting events, where he was her number one fan.
Throughout Jack’s life, he enjoyed deer hunting, camping, fishing at Bass Lake, taking wheeler and motorcycle rides, taking photos of family and friends, and “putzing” around the garage with his best friend, Mike. One story Jack was very proud to share is he had the honor of shaking John F. Kennedy’s hand three times in San Diego. He became a member of St. Anthony Church shortly after his diagnosis of cancer, where he composed a personal and strong relationship with the lord.
Many people will characterize and remember Jack for always being a loyal and true friend. He was trustworthy, loving, and reliable. He was always willing to help his family and friends in need. Jack was a remarkable father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
He will be forever missed by his daughters, Natalie (Jason) Salo, Duluth, MN and Nicole (Justin) Salo, Superior, WI; grandchildren Elliana (7), Khloe (12) and Sadie (15); siblings Jean Darlene Sloan, Superior, WI; Penny (Larry) Mangrum Mesa, AZ; Karey (Ray) Delgado Tampa ,FL; Ronald (Darla) Salo, Superior, WI; Gaye (Steve) Wankewycz, Carol Stream, IL, ; Teresita (Vern) Nault, Sutherland, IA; Richard (Nancy) Salo, Montello, WI; Steven Moran, Navarre, FL; Bob (Marilyn) Tillman, McHenry, IL; Aunt Hazel Salo, Appleton, WI; his lifelong friends, Mike Eagle, Bessemer, AL; Ron Smith (Jill) Siren, WI ; and many nieces and nephews.
